A skirmish of wit

Just a very quick one to point out – in case you had failed to spot it – that the BBC has put up some recently rediscovered footage from Zeffirelli’s 1967 Much Ado About Nothing which starred Maggie Smith (now Dame and famous Dowager) as Beatrice and her future husband Robert Stephens as Benedick.

The production – which also stars a very youthful Derek Jacobi as Don Pedro – is set I couldn’t tell you when, but does feature a bewildering array of costume styles, a lot of phony-looking balustrade, and a brass band, and Beatrice and Benedick very nearly come to blows…

In case that isn’t enough to tempt you, Maggie Smith also sounds (to me) eerily like Penelope Keith (especially as Margo – and is it me or is no-one nowadays called Margo?). What more could you possibly be waiting for? Watch it and tell me what you think!
